Essure

Essure (patient brochure) is a permanent birth control (contraception) procedure that works with your body to create a natural barrier to prevent pregnancy. The Essure procedure can be performed in the office using local anesthesia in a brief 10 minute procedure. The recovery is minimal and patients can be back to work the following day. For almost 10 years, women and their physicians have trusted Essure to be the most effective, permanent birth control solution.

Southern OB/GYN Associates has 2 Essure-Certified doctors, Dr. Anne Doll-Pollard and Dr. Bonnie Gelly. The procedure can be performed in our Breese, IL office but it’s available to all of our patients in the St. Louis metro-east area (Highland, Greenville, Vandalia, Salem and New Baden).

Essure FAQs

Is the Essure procedure painful?

SOGA utilizes pre-procedure oral medications and local anesthesia (numbing medicine) to make sure our patients are comfortable during the brief Essure procedure. Most women report only mild cramping that is gone within a few minutes after the procedure.

Do the Essure inserts contain hormones?

No. The Essure coils are hormone free. They work by using your natural healing to block the fallopian tubes.

Is the Essure treatment as effective as tubal ligation (tied tubes) or a vasectomy?

Yes. Essure has been on the market since 2002 and the data collected since that time suggests Essure may even be more effective.
